Step 2: Submit Application for National Certification. In order to get a national certification, a candidate has to appear for the National Registry of Emergency Medical Technician (NREMT) exam. Once the candidate has attained the North Carolina license, the submission of NREMT certification for recertification is not necessary.

In order to be credentialed as an EMR, EMT, AEMT, or Paramedic, candidates must meet the following criteria: (1) Be at least 18 years of age. (Students who are 17 years of age are eligible to take EMR and EMT state exams; however NC OEMS will hold the credential until the individual turns 18.)
